The Nativity Story (2006)
My thoughts:
One of my favority aspects of this film is how it shows that Jesus was born among the poor and humble as a gift to the poor and humble. The film is powerfully and simply summarized at the end with an excerpt from Mary’s prayer in Luke 1:
The Almighty has done great things
and holy is His nameHe has shown strength with his arm
He has scattered the proudHe has filled the hungry with good things
and the rich He has sent away emptyHe has brought down rulers from their thrones
and has exulted those who are humbleThe film always leaves me with a renewed sense of God’s grace and love. It also challenges me to consider whether I am following Christ’s example of extending special love and kindness to the “least of these” in our society (Matthew 25:31-46). It makes me wonder, “If Jesus were born today under similar circumstances, how would I view and treat him?”
About this resource (source):
In Nazareth, a town oppressed by the devastating taxation practices of King Herod, a teenage girl, Mary, is told by her parents that they have arranged for her to marry Joseph. Distraught by the idea of marrying a man she hardly knows, Mary takes refuge in a grove to collect her thoughts. There, she is visited by an angel, who tells her that she has been chosen by God to bear his son. Despite the public scorn from an unwed pregnancy, together, Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem for a census mandated by the King. It is here, with a great celestial event revealing his prophecy, in a history-defining event, that Jesus is born.
